#39 - It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas

This week we had one of folks engaged in a marathon event. It started with queuing outside Aldi in order to get the right type of Kevin the Carrot, followed by a rest stop in Weatherspoons for breakfast followed by hitting the wall in the Christmas section of Pennys!

Oh and someone else ran 26.2 miles. We think both Pete and Ross's efforts are both worthy of praise and commendation. Ross put some serious training whereas Pete hasn't been inside a Pennys since March ðŸ˜‚

More on Ross later.

The Results

This week (so far) 47 people walked, jogged or ran a 5km route of their choice at a time of their choosing. Our first We finisher is getting close to the elusive sub 20 5km and that is Bryan Donovan with a time of 20:15. Well done Bryan, keep pushing for the sub!
First female finisher was, drum roll please, Imelda Kavanagh. Imelda got in ahead of Sigita by 6 secs and is obviously starting to shake off the marathon as her 5k times improve.
First junior is Sadhbh who continues to put in times week after week.

We had a number of PB's including first finisher Bryan. Well done all of you:
  • Bryan DONOVAN
  • Francesco PETRONI
  • Guillaume TOURRETTE
  • Alan KINSELLA
  • Gerard LEAVY
  • Elma KEANE
  • Stephen RALPH
  • Fiona DOWLING
We also had 3 first timers this week:
  • Derek EGAN
  • Maciej MARCZEWSKI
  • Tony MURPHY
Derek has joined us from Tolka Valley, Maciej we know from the Polish Runners Club and is a member of our Strava group however Tony is that rare instance of a complete first timer. You are very welcome to the community Tony and we look forward to seeing you at a parkrun in the future.

The Strava Table

Now we have noticed that the list of people who are putting in times on Strava is not the same list as the number of people who are logging runs. If you are logging runs and recording them on any form of GPS you can probably have it auto-load on Strava. We you you certainly can with a Garmin.
More importantly if you are logging it on Strava then you can certainly log a time on (not) parkrun.

We would never single a person out Niall but seen as you clocked up all those km's ya would think ya could log a 5k ðŸ˜‚
Well done Niall who with 80km has longest distanced covered. Fastest average pace was Bryan again with a time of 4:39 /km.
Highest elevation gain is that man Niall Harte again with 554m. Second highest was Ross Mara who get a section all of his own this week.

Someone Ran a Marathon

Ross had signalled his intention to start at 07:45 this morning as the weather forecast was dry. We don't think Ross had imagined it was going to be -4c when he was planning it.

Most normal humans would choose a nice route for themselves to complete a virtual marathon. Ross likes a challenge and instead took on this route:

Yes, that includes the Hill of Howth and he went up the steep side!

Not happy with running up Howth Head, in -4c temp, in December, Ross also managed to knock 53 minutes off his personal best for the marathon. We can only imagine what sort of performance he put in on a nice mild day with no feckin' hill.

Huge congratulations Ross, phenomenal running!!

You can view Ross's route and times on Strava here

The Zoom Music Session

Another great night organised by Andy had a number of us on Zoom sharing our music talents (or lack thereof). Zoom does not lend itself to having everyone sing or play along simultaneously so it is a case of one singer one song while the rest of us go on mute.
All standards are welcome, you don't need to be able to play an instrument as you can just sing. Even if you just want to join us to spectate you would be very welcome to and it is good craic with a bit of banter too. This week we had some great stories but Pete wants to prove a point by not mentioning any of them!

Pictured above is Andy in full flow with Fairy tale of New York. Andy claims he can't do Christmas songs but he did a bloody good job of this one!

It's beginning to look a lot like Communion

Lynda had us all laughing at her tribulations when she was told she only had a few days to get Maggie ready for her delayed Communion. They were told they could were their normal clothes and despite a long and heated campaign Lynda held out against the WhatsApp group wishes for Maggie to wear her Halloween costume. We think Lynda may have made the right decision. The only thing that even came close to being as beautiful as Maggie was Keith Earls first try against Scotland ðŸ˜‚

Congratulations Maggie.

The Big News

We had thought that the only thing we would be able to talk about in this weeks run report was the new water fountain!

It is still exciting though! Particularly for our Run Directors who now, when parkrun returns, will not have to worry about getting supplies of water. When we get to the point of returning we will remind everyone to bring their own water bottle though as we really have wanted to get rid of the plastic cups for a long time now.

Oh and well done to Fingal for installing the new water bottle filler.

Francesco's Promise!

Francesco was slightly appalled at the pic shared on WhatsApp of a Lasagna from a local Italian eatery. Now we would highly recommend the the restaurant but we are not going to argue if Francesco  is going to bake a big lasagna for our return. Actually we (Pete) won't object if you sneak one around to us in the meantime!

We hope all of you are taking advantage of the restaurants being open again. Remember it is important to support our local businesses.

What about them other guys

We really thought we might sneak up on Erris this week but alas this week it was not to be. At least not yet. Get 'em logged if you are still holding some!

Well done to Mayo on reaching the All Ireland final. Even more so as two of the starting line up were Erris men. We look forward to the All Ireland final now when there will be a bit of banter with Erris.

We will be starting a full campaign to take Erris as well in the (not) parkruns. 77 this week they have. We can easily beat that!!

And that is it

Have a great week folks. Enjoy the ongoing Christmas preparations and any more Communions or Confirmations that may arise! Don't forget to take care of yourself and get out for a bit of a walk at least. If you feel up to it then get a full 5km in and log it for us so we can stick to those Mayo lads.

We leave you with the Finians Rounders team back out in the park training!
