#36 What have we started!

Well St Anne's got well into the spirit this week. River Valley may not be able to compete with St Anne's or Tralee but we we can hold our head high in that it was our initial competition with Tralee that kicked all this off.

We are currently in 5th place ahead of, surprisingly, Marlay with Bushy behind them again. We have to remember that parkrun is very much not a race but that in itself is why a little inter county/parkrun rivalry is completely harmless. Anyone can contribute, it doesn't matter how fast or slow you are, it doesn't matter if you have never ran, it doesn't even matter if you have never taken part in a parkrun. (not) parkrun is for everyone.

There is no truth whatsoever in the rumour that Erris parkrun are using some extra incentives to get people out! We think we would lose a lot of River Valley people to Errris if this was true!
We also noted that Event Director, Pádraig Brogan celebrated a birthday this week so a big happy birthday Pádraig.

Current (not) Standings

As we said St Anne's have the bit between their teeth and seem to be streets ahead. We reckon the weather has a lot to do with everyone else's numbers being down. There have been a few gaps of mild dry weather but they have few and far between.

It looks like Marlay have blindly walked into the battle and are now caught in the crossfire. We fully expect both Bushy and Buncrana to get their numbers up today. Buncrana have a bit of family rivalry with Tralee as the ED's of Buncrana are sister and brother-in-law to Siobhan who is ED of Tralee. The Kearney's it would seem could give the Coppingers a run for their money as a notable parkrun family.

What about Australia

It might be a stretch too far but we have one thing in our favour and that is time. It is already 9 o'clock at night in Sydney so whatever runs they are going to log are pretty much already ran. We can close that 300+ gap today. Get into the game and get Ireland up the table. This is our last chance to beat Australia fairly as they see a return to parkrun next week and the (not) will end for them in some regions.

We give a special shout out to two Erris parkrunners who are acting as sleeper agents and logging their (not) parkruns from Melbourne, Australia.

The (not) results

It is tight at the top with Niall Harte taking the first finisher spot but hot on his heels were both Alan Murphy and Bryan Donovan. Bryan was particularly missing parkrun because he ran the route and knocked 34 seconds off his previous real parkrun pb.

First female this week is Sigita while second female finisher was Bianca Murphy with a new PB.

First junior and first female junior and only junior is Sadhbh Beirne. Well done Sadhbh on flying the flag for the juniors.

Audrey pictured above got out for her first long run since the marathon. "Slow, steady and soaked" was Audrey's summation of her 12k run. Well done missus.

Well done too to Ross who managed to get a PB for his half this week

All that training up Howth head has well and truly paid off Ross. Well done on what is a well earned result.

Congratulations to all our PB's this week who were:
  • Paul GRIMES
  • Bianca MURPHY
  • Francesco PETRONI
  • Rosaline HARRINGTON
  • Alan KINSELLA
  • Raymond GILLEN
  • Una O'RIORDAN
  • Elma KEANE
  • Aland MOEN
  • Karen STEELE
  • Eugene COPPINGER
  • Mandisa NOZULU
Great running folks. We also welcome three firt timers to the (not) parkrun family.
  • Robert SAVAGE
  • Derek CORBETT
  • Stephen RALPH

The Strava Tables

Great to see people still getting out despite the horrible weather. Ross takes the distance  and longest run crown to go along with Half PB.

Despite his own personal PB on the parkrun route Bryan Donovan was just pipped for the fastest pace from that man Niall Harte.

Niall also takes the elevation crown with 462m climbed. We know Niall is with the defence forces and normally try not to draw attention to this and appear like some weirdo stalker. However we did not that a recent elevation number from Niall was from the Glen of Imaal. In normal times you could end up doing some training in "The Glen" for any number of reasons but these are not normal times. Sure enough if you look at Niall's strava for this week it reveals he is ever so slightly outside the 3km limit from his home by about 5000km.

We would wish you Niall, and all members of Irish Batt, Unifil, in South Lebanon a safe and peaceful tour of duty.

A bit of a birthday

Áine took a break from her studies after she dropped the kids to school on Tuesday and went to Malahide castle for a walk. She wasn't sure what drew her there but it may have been fate as her phone chose that moment to tell her it was the 8th birthday of Malahide parkrun and therefore parkrun in the Republic of Ireland. Áine had intended just to have short walk but the birthday notice inspired her to compete a 5k around what remains a beautiful park.

Áine did take her time and take a few pictures to capture was a beautiful autumnal morning.

Happy birthday Malahide!

The Grove Show

Brian pushed out another great Grove Show on Friday night. You can listen to the playback of the show on mixcloud at https://www.mixcloud.com/bjtucker/show-for-cecil-13-nov-20/.

Get listening and push the show up the mixcloud charts.

Brian was also telling us he was attending a wedding on Saturday and revealed some of the rules that had to be followed. You could have a DJ but no amplification is allowed. What does the DJ do play tunes on his phone? Even if he could play music you are not allowed to dance. It might lead to a different type of wedding but at least with 25 guests there will be plenty of time for good chats.

The Bass Player

The River Valley core team are trialling a musical get together which if it works out we will roll out to include anyone else who wishes to join. At moment we just had one session and will host another to work out the technicalities before we widen it.

However while we were on Terry told us a great story. When he was a young lad Terry was a member of the Artane Boys Band. He was keen to point out that he was not an orphan but had joined as an ordinary member.

Terry played the Tuba and he told us that within the marching band world the Tuba is referred to as the bass.

Meanwhile Terry saw someone had put up a notice about forming a band and they were looking for a bass player! You can see where this is going, right?

Terry turned up to the potential band's meeting/rehearsal room only to have it explained to him in colourful language that they needed a bass guitar player. But it is nice to have a memory of being called a feckin' eejit by none other than U2 drummer Larry Mullen.

We grabbed that quote from the official U2 website. No one would ever guess that when Larry was talking about this odd group of people that it included our Terry sitting in the corner with a feckin' tuba!!!

Well done to Scotland who qualified for the Euros. This is their first major tournament for 22 years. The picture above captures Nicola Sturgeon's reaction which is somewhat muted compared to our own Scottish lads Ed, Stephen and Mark. Well done lads. It will be great to have a team to support at the tournament.

That's it

We are done for now. We will push out a results note tomorrow when we have the final figures for the (not).  Do have a great week, do get out for a run/walk/jog this week. It is one of the few things we have at the moment that can lift our spirits.
