#35 Dancing in the Rain

A wise man once wrote (on facebook) that life isn't about waiting for the storm to pass, it's about learning to dance in the rain.

Well we had a few people dancing this week!

The Wedding aka Some Dancin'

Married

on Saturday November 7th 2020

We are thrilled and delighted to see Pete and Rachel tie the knot. They had put it off due to the pandemic but some last minute planning and they decided to just get on with it. Both of them are members of the River Valley core team and contribute greatly to our parkrun.

The word on the street is that they had a great day. Today may be different as Rachel's Da Andy was hounding the wedding party into a 5k in order to get some (not) parkruns logged!

We wish them a long and happy life together.

Still Dancin'

Debbie Green had a really bad run om the day of the marathon and was absolutely devastated. Mary Cahill offered great support after the disappointment and they both looked for another marathon they could do. Wild Atlantic Way marathon was scheduled for the same day as the DCM and obviously got postponed. However Debbie and Mary were not to be denied and they contacted the organisers of the Wild Atlantic Way and asked if they if they could still do it virtually and they were told they could once it was within two weeks of the event.

So off they set and not only did Debbie complete her marathon both Mary had a humongous event when she ran a sub 4hr 30m for the first team in 23 marathon events!

Wow just wow!!!
Huge well done to both of you. Just sorry we can't use all the wonderful photos and videos you shared with us!

More Dancin'

Another member of the River Valley family was presented with a first class honours degree in psychology but none other than the postman!

Sam Trevaskis overcame a lot of challenges to secure her first including a serious illness. Sam has since gone on to start her Masters this year and has applied for her Phd course next year. Her masters had to go into the distance learning mode due to the pandemic but Sam was better prepared than most as her degree programme was completely through distance learning.
She also has an interview for the role of research assistant in DCU in the coming week!

Go Sam!!

and now for some dancin' of the running and walking variety!

News from the Front!

We need to talk about Erris

While the two behemoths of (not) parkrun Tralee and St Anne's slug it out for the top spot there are some call-outs. Malahide are close to another record turn-out. Bushy have another record turn-out which is commendable but it is not the big story.

Situated in one of the most spectacular spots in the country, on the road from Belmullet to Blacksod is Erris parkrun.  It is both desolate and stunning in equal measure. It has recorded an average attendance of 41 participants when they were active. For (not) parkrun they had been tootling along with 3 or 4 people logging their (not)'s since it all started.

So we are not sure what they have put in the water but last week they had 41 run/walks logged matching their active average and this week, well holy God, they have 80 and are chasing our humble 82.

Lets put this in perspective

Bushy are rightly proud of getting a record number out for their parkrun this week but at less than 21% of their average finishers they have a long way to go to reach the dizzy heights of Erris who have 187% of their average.

To fully understand this River Valley would have to have 191 (not)'s logged to equal that and Bushy would have to have 327.

As a side note Marlay would have to have 603!!!

Go Erris!!!

.............but let's get our's logged to keep the Mayo upstarts at bay!!!

Our Results

This week, so far, 83 of us ran/walked or jogged a 5k or 2. Of this we had no less than 11 personal bests this week and 2 first timers one of whom is truly momentous!

The PB's were
  • Ronan MURPHY
  • Francesco PETRONI
  • Alan MURPHY
  • Eamonn O'NEILL
  • Owen KELLY
  • Fintan CURRAN
  • Bianca MURPHY
  • Jennifer GRIMES
  • Padraig SCANLON
  • Caoimhe MCCARTHY
  • Siobhan MCCARTHY
Well done Siobhán who is one of our best leaders in the (not) parkrun world.

Our two first timers were Alan Kinsella and Eugene Coppinger.
Alan is a great one to get as he has never taken part in a full parkrun. He is not our first of this category and we really look forward to seeing you at a full parkrun in the future.

But.....................

Alan is not the momentous one, it is Eugene. The reason been that Eugene, despite the fact that he is a regular with River Valley and lives locally, has never had River Valley as his home parkrun. That honour was Tymon Park.  Eugene has officially switched to River Valley and we would like to extend a very warm welcome to Eugene to our community 😂😂😂

This weeks first finisher is yet again.........................Cecile!
First male to finish was Alan Murphy with a new PB. 3 of the first 4 had PB's. Great running guys.

First male junior was Sean McCarthy and first female junior was Sean's sister Caoimhe who also scored a new PB.

 The Strava Table

Top of the table for distance this week was Niall Harte. We really wish Niall would log some (not)'s for us as we see those 7 runs go a beggin'.

Longest run was Artur Los who thought he would throw in a marathon early in the week.
The best average pace was Eoin O'Mahony with 4:49 /km and the biggest climb was also Niall Harte with a phenomenal 950m.

If you are wondering why we use a private unofficial Strava group it is because Сергей Пруцин is topping the table with 120km covered. We think his name is Sergey and he is in Russia. We are sure he is a wonderful person.

The Remembrance Run

One of the most poignant events of the year is the Remembrance Run. This year it has, like so many others, gone virtual. Mo sent in this great pic after he completed his.

Anyone else get a Remembrance Run in?

The Inter County

Kerry look like they will take the title again this week and this despite the good numbers from Malahide. We all need to up our game.

However.........................

We honestly only included that image as it was Whatsapp'd to us asking is this the reason for the lateness of the run report this week!!

..............and finally

Have a great week folks but do get out there and get your parkruns logged. Get your friends and family out there too. It will do them a world of good (and might put us back in the game)

Remember:

Keep Dancing
